Wildlife with Epiphany
On Sunday, September 27, the congregation of Epiphany United Church of Christ, 2911 McNair in Benton Park, will host a special outdoor worship service as part of the dedication and designation of their Serenity
Garden as a Certified Wildlife Habitat.
The National Wildlife Federation began its Wildlife Habitat certification program in 1973, and since that time more than 113,000 habitats have gained certification. Epiphany’s church yard is the second wildlife habitat to gain the Certified Wildlife Habitat designation in Missouri.
In order to become certified, a property must provide the four basic elements that all wildlife need: food, water, cover and places to raise young; and must employ sustainable gardening practices. The Epiphany Gardening Group, led by Janice Markham, is employing rain barrels and other environmentally conscious gardening techniques in the Serenity Garden.
The Rev. Mary A. Albert said, “The Mission of the National Wildlife Federation is to inspire U.S. citizens to protect wildlife for our children’s future. This is very compatible with the Whole Earth Covenant that our congregation adopted in 2008. We want to encourage practices that protect the environment for the sake of future generations.”
The worship service for Sept. 27 will be conducted in the church yard just south of the church building at 10:30 a.m., weather permitting. Special resolutions from the Missouri General Assembly and the St. Louis Board of Aldermen are expected to be shared during the dedication of the garden as a Certified Wildlife Habitat. A potluck meal will follow in the fellowship hall, and the neighborhood is invited to join the congregation for either or both events.
