Worship before you tailgate at Shrine of St. Joseph
By American staff
Just as most families have been enjoying Thanksgiving leftovers this week while looking forward to the holiday season (and the inauguration of President Barack Obama on Jan. 20), the Gospel Scene has a sampling of leftover news items and upcoming event announcements to share this week.
The Legend Singers Choral Ensemble will present a free holiday concert, “The Soulful Sounds of the Seasons,” at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 at Ward Chapel AME, 11410 Old Halls Ferry in Florissant. The Legend Singers is a choral group, directed by Dr. Doris Jones-Wilson, whose mission is to perform and preserve the music of the African-American experience.
Youth drama
A New Cornerstone Inc., a faith-based non-profit organization, will present “Look Before You Leap,” a multimedia drama and comedy that teaches to pursue healthy relationships by avoiding destructive choices, at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5 at Harris-Stowe State University, 3026 Laclede Ave. The show is a part of the organization’s Youth Abstinence Initiative and will be used as an educational tool to assist today’s youth with making tough decisions. The event is free. For more information, call Karen Freeman at 314-521-2243, ext. 302.
Hail Mary
The St. Louis Rams haven’t given their fans much to celebrate this season, but the Historic Shrine of St. Joseph, 1220 North 11th St. in Downtown St. Louis, wants local football fans to know they can always add an historic service in their sanctuary n hearing Mass in Latin, just like in the old days n before any Rams tailgate party. The next Rams home games are Sunday, Dec. 14 and Dec. 21. Mass is at 9 a.m., over by 10 a.m. and there is a parking lot just north of the Shrine with an entrance off 10th St. “Offer a HAIL MARY at the altar of answered prayers, site of a Vatican-authenticated miracle,” Anne Reis Voss of the Shrine writes. “Maybe your team can throw one.”
Kinloch celebration
Southern Mission Baptist Church, 8171 Wesley Ave. in Kinloch, has two things to celebrate at its 8 a.m. service on Sunday, Dec. 14 n it will honor the 80-plus-year-old Mother Annie House and Sis. Shawnna Caldwell will preach her first sermon. The church also will not be holding its 11 a.m. services in December. Call the church at 521-3951.
