Nightly tent revivals at Solomon’s Temple
By American staff
The Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church will celebrate the 28th pastoral anniversary of the Rev. Sammie E. Jones next week, with services at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 19, Thursday, September 20 and Friday, September 21. The service on Friday will be First Lady’s Night honoring First Lady Sandra Jones, and the Grand Finale will be Sunday, September 23 with two services, at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
Jones said Mount Zion continues to grow, adding some 445 members in the past year, bringing attending membership to about 2,100. Recent developments at the church, located at 1444 South Compton, include a job training program organized in collaboration with the St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment, and plans to build a new retail center behind Mount Zion’s Family Life Center, on Park Avenue at Compton.
Those who plan to attend events should contact the church’s business office at (314) 776-3888.
Taking the Temple to the streets
The Solomon’s Temple Church is “Taking the Church to The Streets” in nightly tent revivals (The Big Top). The church is “coming out of the four walls, bringing prayer, dynamic preaching, fellowship and more” every night, finishing on Sunday, Sept. 16 with Friends and Family Day.
For those want lunch-hour prayer, Noon Day Services are available from 12 to 1 p.m. every day this week.
Solomon’s Temple pastors and founders are Bishop James E. Holloway Sr. and Linda D. Holloway.
Fasting for debt relief
On September 6, the Rev. David Duncombe began 40 days of fasting and lobbying Capitol Hill to win support for the Jubilee Act, a bill that would cancel the debts of 67 of the poorest countries and establish responsible lending practices for the future. Currently, indebted nations spend an average of $100 million each day to service their debts.
Forty major religious and other leaders including Rev. Jim Wallis of Sojourners/Call to Renewal; Argentinean Nobel Laureate Adolfo Perez Esquivel; John Thomas, President, United Church of Christ; Ron Sider, Founder, Evangelicals for Social Action; and Rabbi Michael Lerner of Tikkun will participate in day-long fasts during the same time. Up to 20,000 Americans are expected to participate, according to Jubilee USA Network.
2007 is a Sabbath Year, a time when the Hebrew Texts and the New Testament call for an end to debt and slavery. The goal of the fast is to secure a hearing on the Jubilee Act in the House of Representatives and introduction of a companion bill in the Senate. 2007 also marks the halfway point to the G-8 Millennium Development Goal of cutting worldwide poverty in half by 2015, a goal to which the U.S. committed in 2000.
