Special to The American

The United Way of Greater St. Louis recently presented a $10,000 award to the Bread of Life Christian Center in East St. Louis, Illinois. This award was a reinvestment to help the center expand the services of their financial literacy program.

“United Way remains a consistent partner in identifying needs and improving the quality of health and human services within the metropolitan and metro east community,” said Cassandra E. Griffin, director of Community Investment Division at United Way.

The Bread of Life Family Enrichment Financial Literacy Program will conduct several six-week financial literacy training series targeting adults and teens from the surrounding East St. Louis, Washington Park, Alorton, Cahokia, Belleville, Fairview Heights, O’Fallon, Centreville and Swansea, Illinois areas.

The program will be held at the Bread of Life Christian Church on Mondays from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. For further information, contact Bread of Life Church at 314-271-7370.

In the spring of 2006, United Way of Greater St. Louis conducted several forums to bring faith-based organizations together to find ways of enhancing new or existing educational programs and/or congregational resources that provide structured alternatives for youth and their families. Since that time, United Way has awarded more than $300,000 to faith-based community programs throughout its service area in Missouri and Illinois.

Jamison Memorial CME turns 93

Jamison Memorial CME Church (1917-2010) is celebrating its 93rd Anniversary – “Ninety Three Years of Christian Fellowships, not perfect but striving, and praying continually along the way.”

Jamison Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in 1917 through the vision of the Reverend Nathaniel Moore and 20 Charter Christian believers.

Those 20 cofounders are the Rev. James Tabor, Mr. Samuel Harris, Mr. George Suttles, Mr. Moses Harrison, Mr. Moses Young, Mr. Joseph Harrison, Mr. Thaddeus Harrison, Mrs. Celestia Moore, Mrs. Elvira Young, Mrs. Lila Brown, Mr. Tyus Marion, Mrs. Lula Marion, Rev. Harrison Little, Mr. Jessie Spruill and Mr. Edward Williams, who met regularly for prayer in his home.

The church was named in honor of CME Bishop Monroe Franklin Jamison. Rev. Moore reported the membership to the 1917 Annual Conference, and Rev. Albert Conner was appointed to organize the membership with its first officers: Steward Board, Stewardess Board, Class Leaders, and Sunday School Superintendent.

As the membership continued to grow the church made several moves in the Mill Creek area, to 3144 Laclede, 400 South Jefferson and 413 South Jefferson.

On October 22, 1945, the Reverend Charles A. Craig led the congregation as they marched with pride, humility and thankfulness to the present location 2801 Washington Ave. at Leffingwell Avenue in St. Louis, Missouri.

All are welcome to share in this 93rd Anniversary Celebration. For further information, call (314) 533-2440.
