Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson has resigned from the department.
His resignation was announced Saturday by one of his attorneys, Neil Bruntrager. The resignation is effective immediately, Bruntrager told The Associated Press.
The news of Wilson’s resignation comes less than a week after a grand jury decided not to indict him for fatally shooting unarmed teen Michael Brown Jr. in the Canfield Green Apartments on August 9.
He’s been on paid administrative leave since the shooting.
Outrage over Brown’s death at the hands of Wilson spawned international attentions and protests against police brutality for what many call “black on blue” crimes.
Demonstrations related to Brown’s death were reignited following St. Louis County Prosecutor Robert McCulloch’s announcement that Wilson would not be indicted – and continue at press time.
Bruntrager told the Associated Press that a news conference regarding the resignation is being planned.
