The Dr. Donald M. Suggs Scholarship is designed to enhance recruitment and retention of academically talented undergraduate students from ethnic groups that are typically under-represented in higher education. This scholarship is named to honor Dr. Donald M. Suggs, newspaper publisher, retired oral surgeon, patron of the arts and distinguished community leader. His contributions to the City of St. Louis and the State of Missouri are recognized and honored by the University of Missouri-Columbia.
To be considered for the Dr. Donald M. Suggs Scholarship, the applicant must have achieved a minimum ACT test score of 27 or higher (or SAT equivalent of 1200 or higher).
One new award will be made each year. Recipients of the Dr. Donald M. Suggs Scholarship will receive a maximum of $12,500 each year—$5000 each year for fall and spring semesters provided by the University of Missouri-Columbia and an additional $2500 per academic year provided by the St. Louis American Foundation. Non-Missouri residents will receive an out-of-state tuition waiver. Recipients are also eligible to receive up to an additional $7000 to study abroad—$6000 provided by the University of Missouri-Columbia and $1000 provided by the St. Louis American Foundation. The scholarship is renewable for an additional three years (eight semesters total) or receipt of undergraduate degree, whichever occurs first.
Renewal criteria are:
- Maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5
- Enroll in a minimum of 12 credits each semester
- Complete a minimum of 24 credits each academic year
- Participation in the MAP program through Academic Retention Services
Students may also be eligible to receive:
- National Merit Scholarship
- Bright Flight Scholarship
- Need-based financial aid

The Dr. Donald M. Suggs Scholarship cannot be combined with other University scholarships such as the Brooks Scholarship, Diversity Award, INROADS Scholarship, Curators Scholar Award, Excellence Award, Nonresident Scholars Award, etc. The Dr. Donald M. Suggs Scholarship may be reduced if all federal, state, institutional and private aid received by the student exceeds the cost of attendance as defined by the MU Student Financial Aid Office.
