How have your duties changed since you started with Express Scripts in 2009?

I started with Express Scripts after earning a Computer Science degree at UMSL.  I worked in the User Access and Identity Management department.  After getting my first real taste of Information Security while administrating access to different systems, learning about Compliance, automation, and employee onboarding, I wanted to learn more. Coincidentally, this has become a very hot field in the IT world and last year I was fortunate to transition over to the Digital Forensics and Incident Response team where I help to identify and protect our company systems from information thieves.

As an IT professional, how do you suggest the general public keep up with current and ever-changing technology?

Constant learning is a must.  I’m always reading new articles and listening to podcasts created by industry leaders.  The risky.biz podcast is a great resource for those who want to stay current with general information security news, system vulnerabilities and breaches.  Getting hands-on experience with different technologies is also important and there are plenty of free labs and tools available online to gain new or sharpen existing IT skills.  Lastly, keeping an open mind to new ways of doing things and learning from others is extremely important.  The information technology field is so broad that it’s rare to find two IT professionals with exactly the same knowledge level.

As a young professional, where do you see yourself in 5 years, and in what capacity?

In 5 years I see myself leveraging the knowledge I’ve gained to lead a team or support an existing security program in a leadership capacity.  I really enjoy working through problems with teams and helping individuals grow.

These threats appear to be growing because of a number of reasons. First, attackers are very persistent, and while defenses are improving, where there is a will, there will always be a way.  New vulnerabilities are being discovered daily.  Second, there is a great shortage of qualified IT security professionals in the labor market.  There are several positions open at Express Scripts and other companies in the St. Louis market.  Last, media sensationalism plays a huge role in the number and way breaches are reported.  There aren’t necessarily more breaches, but when they happen, they get much more publicity than they have in the past.

How do you find time for your extensive involvement with professional organizations (such as the United Way, RBC and St. Louis Business Diversity Initiative Fellows program)?

Life is all about prioritization and passion.  If something is important to me, I will make the time for it.  Professional development, learning, and giving back, are permanent parts of my life journey.
