What are some of the interesting things you’ve learned about how business is conducted in other countries, through your extensive international travels?

I have observed many differences as well as similarities between countries regarding pharmaceutical regulations. In such a competitive and vastly different market, when it comes to regulations each country is different in regards to how they oversee, price, market and distribute pharmaceuticals. One reassuring fact is that no matter how different or stringent the requirements, all regulators strive for the same goal, which is patient safety. A quality product to improve quality of life remains the upmost factor for patients. Lastly, from an economic standpoint, I have had the opportunity to see how certain countries’ education systems and workforce are intricately intertwined. In order to create a sustainable workforce and constant flow of professionals, some countries provide a college education for free! Obtaining a college degree without any debt is absolutely intriguing.

Why did you decide to go back to college and pursue an MBA degree?

I am all about continuous improvement and how to make things (processes, systems, etc) better. That same thought is applicable to me, which is why I obtained my MBA. In order to get ahead in life, a person must take steps to set themselves apart from competition. My career was on the right track, but I wanted to enhance my education growth for a better chance of future career opportunities.

What are your hopes for the outcomes of your work as part of Mallinckrodt’s Inclusion and Diversity Council?

As the community outreach co-lead for the African American business resource group, I am dedicated to fostering a positive image for Mallinckrodt while focusing on programs to improve health, wellness, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education.

Please share with our readers what the Girls Inc. EUREKA program is and why you chose to be a mentor in the program?

While most people may not like working with teens, I am just the opposite. I love working with teens whether at my church, Metropolitan MB, Girls Inc. or any other organization. I remember myself as a teen and how I wished someone with passion and self-confidence would mentor me. The main reason I enjoy the Girls Inc. EUREKA program is because I am able to share my passion for STEM. If I can support a young lady’s dream to pursue a career in STEM, or share the possibilities of a STEM career, then I feel one of my earthly missions has been accomplished. It is my goal to ensure that young ladies know their self-worth, and understand that with hard work all things are possible.

What’s next for Deatra McFarlin?

What is next for me, enjoying this moment while not being obsessed about the future.  One of my favorite quotes by Bill Watterson says it best, “We’re so busy watching out for what’s just ahead of us that we don’t take time to enjoy where we are.” I am very content and blessed at this point in my life.  The future will happen, but the service and work that I do now will determine the outcome of my future. I do believe that God has greater things in store for my life and career. Therefore, I continue to strive to do my best at all times while helping people and serving my community.
