In this week’s notebook, we are going to take a look at what the top players from the St. Louis area are doing at the collegiate level. Our kids from the STL are representing the area quite well around the country.
Former Chaminade College Prep All-American Bradley Beal is making a huge impact at the University of Florida. The 2011 National Prep Player of the Year is currently averaging 15.5 points a game, along with 6.3 rebounds and two assists in 35 minutes of action per game for the Gators. In his last game, he scored a game-high 21 points in a victory over Florida State.
McCluer North product B.J. Young is also making a big impact as a freshman at the University of Arkansas. Young is currently averaging 15.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists while shooting 51 percent from the field and 46 percent from 3-point range. Young scored a season-high 28 points in a recent game at Connecticut on national television.
Here is a list of other players from the St. Louis area that are putting in work in the collegiate ranks.
*Jesse Perry (Arizona): The former Gateway Tech standout is averaging 11.5 points and 7.6 rebounds while shooting 54 percent from the field.
*Anthony James (Northern Iowa): The former Normandy High standout leads the Panthers in scoring at 13.7 points a game. He is also averaging 3.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and shooting 42 percent from 3-point range in leading UNI to a 10-2 record.
*Kenneth Harris (Evansville): Former Gateway Tech standout is averaging 12.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and shooting 50 percent from the field.
*Drew Hanlen (Belmont): Webster Groves product is averaging 9.8 points and 3.5 assists while shooting 42 percent from 3-point range.
*Tony Meier (UW-Milwaukee): Former Lafayette standout is averaging 10 points and 3.9 rebounds a game. Scored a season-high 20 points in a recent victory at DePaul.
*Christian Thomas (Loyola-Chicago): Former Clayton standout has cracked the starting lineup for the Ramblers. Currently averaging 5.4 points and 4.7 rebounds in 26 minutes per game.
*Dantiel Daniels (Southern Illinois): Former Holt standout is averaging six points and four rebounds while leading the Salukis in blocked shots. Scored a season-high 22 points against Xavier on Sunday.
*Leon Powell (Southeast Missouri State): Former Vashon standout is averaging 12.2 poitns and 6.9 rebounds while shooting a whopping 73 percent from the field. Led the nation in field goal percentage last season.
*Roosevelt Jones (Butler): Former O’Fallon standout is averaging 6.1 points and 5.8 rebounds in several starting assignments as a freshman.
*Tyler Griffey (Illinois): Former Lafayette standout is averaging seven points and 4.8 rebounds a game for the Fighting Illini.
*Jerome Jones (SIUE): Former Career Academy standout is averaging 12 points and seven rebounds for the Cougars. Current teammate Mike Messer (Lafayette) is averaging seven points and three rebounds a game.
*DeShaun Cooper (Northwest Missouri State): Former Jennings standout is averaging 14.6 pionts, three rebounds and two steals a game in leading NWMO to a 9-1 record.
*Seth Jackson (Truman State): Former CBC standout is currently averaging 10 points a game as a freshman.
*Courtney Belger (Quincy): Former Hazelwood Central standout is averaging 12.8 points and 4.6 rebounds for the 6-2 Hawks. Teammate Chris Babbitt (Hazelwood Central) is averaging 10.5 points and 5.3 rebounds.
*Kramer Soderberg (Lindenwood): Former St. Charles West standout is averaging more than 20 points a game in leading the Lions to an 8-1 record.
On the women’s side:
*Jasmine Bailey (UIC): Former Normandy standout is averaging 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Flames in both categories.
*Shamiea Green (UIC): Former Normandy standout is averaging 11 points and four assists per game. Recently scored her 1,000th point in her career.
*Jazmin Hitchens (Illinois State): Former Incarnate Word standout is averaging 11.1 points, 3.8 rebounds while shooting 40 percent from 3-point range and 92 percent from the free-throw line.
*Brittany Carter (Illinois State): Former Incarnate Word standout is averaging 9.5 points and three assists while shooting 40 percent from 3-point range and 91 percent from the free throw line.
*Shania Hurst (Arkansas State): Former Kirkwood High standout is averaging 11.6 points, 4.2 rebounds while shooting 43 percent from 3-point range.
*Katie Broadway (Illinois State): Former Bethalto standout is averaging a team-high 15 poitns a game and 3.5 rebounds for the Redbirds.
*SIUE metro east teammates Michaela Herrod (Alton), Raven Berry (Collinsville), Jazmin Hill (Althoff) and Katie Hempen (Highland) are the Cougars top four scorers on a 6-5 team. Herrod is averaging 11.2 points, Berry is averaging 10.1 points and 8.9 rebounds, Hill and Hempen are averaging nine points a game.
*Bianca Beck (SEMO): Former Incarnate Word point guard is averaging 6.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and team-high three assists per game.
