Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts helped his team jump on the Kansas
City Chiefs early and didn’t let up until he was named Super Bowl LIX MVP.
Hurts completed 17-of-22 passes for 221 yards, to go with two touchdowns and one
interception. He rushed 11 times for 72 yards and had a rushing touchdown in the
40-22 beat down of the Chiefs in the Ceasars Superdome in New Orleans.
Following the game and his MVP trophy presentation, Hurst said, “God is good. I
couldn’t be here without my teammates, the effort and determination everybody
displayed to get to this point.”
Hurts, who most likely would have been MVP in the Super Bowl against the Chiefs
two years ago had Patrick Mahomes not rallied his team to a 38-25 win, became
the first player in NFL history to have at least five passing touchdowns and five
rushing touchdowns in a single postseason.
He also became the first quarterback to lead both teams in rushing yards since
Steve Young in Super Bowl XXIX. He bettered his own record from two seasons
back when he rushed for 72 yards in this year’s game. He had 70 in the previous
Super Bowl. Hurts is also the lone quarterback to have more than 50 yards rushing
in two games.
Hurts also praised his defense, which harassed Mahomes from the start of the
game. Mahomes threw two interceptions, one that was returned for a touchdown
to give the Eagles a 17-0 lead in the second quarter.
“Defense wins championships,” Hurts said. “We saw how they played today. We saw
the difference they made in the game. They gave us opportunities, gave us short
fields. And we’re able to do what we do.”
