The summer season for St. Louisan Jayson Tatum just continues to get better and better.
Just two weeks after leading the Boston Celtics to a NBA-record 18th world championship, Tatum and the Celtics have agreed on a new contract extension that will be the biggest in the history of the league.
Tatum’s new extension is a five-year deal worth $314 million. The former Chaminade College Prep star became eligible for this supermax extension after he was named to the All-NBA First Team after the 2023-24 season.
In his seventh season with Boston, Tatum led the Celtics to a 64-18 record, which was the best in the NBA. In 19 playoff games, he averaged 25 points, 9.7 rebounds and 6.3 assists to lead the Celtics in all three categories. The Celtics amassed a 16-3 record en route to winning the championship. Tatum had 31 points, eight rebounds and 11 assists in the Celtics’ 106-88 victory over the Dallas Mavericks in the championship clinching Game 5 of the NBA Finals.
Tatum, 26, was a repeat member of the All-NBA First team in 2024 after averaging 26.9 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists while shooting 47 percent from the field.
The next order of business for Tatum is a trip to Paris, France, where he will compete in the Summer Olympics as a member of the USA men’s basketball team. Tatum will be seeking his second gold medal. He helped the USA to a gold medal in the 2021 Olympics in Japan as he was the team’s second leading scorer behind Kevin Durant of the Phoenix Suns.
