One quarter, San Francisco 49ers receiver Antonio Bryant looked ready to fight his quarterback and team.
The next quarter, he teamed with QB Alex Smith on a 72-yard touchdown that helped the underdogs to a 20-13 victory over the St. Louis Rams.
“We are learning this new system,” quarterback Marc Bulger said of the Rams’ continuing offensive struggles
“It’s one thing to know it on paper, but it’s going to take time and reps. You have to grow a little bit. It’s painful, but that’s just reality.”
All-Pro tackle Orlando Pace left the game in the second quarter with a concussion. Bulger was under duress the rest of the game.
Coach Scott Linehan plugged Todd Steussie in Pace’s place with Adam Goldberg coming in at left guard. That didn’t work too well as the 49ers racked up six sacks on the day and caused Bulger to fumble late, helping to ruin a potential game-winning drive.
