Basketball legend and St. Louis native Ed Macauley has died at the age of 83.
Macauley was one of the NBA’s first stars – who won a championship with the Boston Celtics and then was traded for Bill Russell.
Saint Louis University announced Macauley’s death yesterday (Tuesday, Nov. 8).”Easy Ed” was a standout player with the Billikens, leading them to the 1948 NIT title.
He was a territorial pick of the St. Louis Basketball Association of America franchise, the Bombers. He played there for one season and then was selected by the Celtics in a dispersal draft.
Macauley played for the Celtics from the 1950-51 season until 1955-56.
He also played for the St. Louis Hawks and was a vital part of the Hawks championship title in the 1958-59 season.
Macauley was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1960 and has been named one of the NBA’s Top 100 Players of All Time.
