When St. Louisan Anthony Graham saw the television crew filming a documentary, he knew the game of darts had become popular.

“When I saw the guy walking around with the camera, I was like ‘whoa,’” Graham said.

The crew was at the National Darts Association’s Team Darts 2006 competition and for Graham, it only got better. Graham was apart of DJ Strokers, the team that won the National Dart Association’s Team Darts 2006 open team cricket division Level 3 International Championship in Las Vegas recently.

“Our motto for the week was that there was no such thing as a loser’s bracket.

Graham and four other area dart throwers won the competition while they were in Las Vegas. Along with Graham, Micah Brown (also from St. Louis) and East St. Louisans W J Cade, David Misiaszek and Willis Jackson II were on the team.

Though it was the first time the group had competed in Las Vegas for the international competition, dart throwing is nothing new for the group.

Last Thursday, at Topshooters Bar in Columbia, Ill., the darts are flying. DJ Storkers and DJ Force are there, heaving darts in the smoke-filled lounge.

Graham has been throwing darts for 12 years and says most of the group got together after they had competed against each other.

The team, which is part of Grandmasters Dart Club, is playing the team from Columbia and is getting into it.

Brown, who Graham says is one of the best darts players he’s seen, need two bullseyes to close out the game of cricket they are playing.

“Excuse me, I’ve got work to do,” he says.

He then nails two perfect bulls-eyes for DJ Force and wins the match.

Brown has only been playing for less than five years, but for Jackson, or has he is known by others, Dr. Jack, he has been playing for awhile.

A small group of local dart throwers from the St. Louis and East St. Louis area recently shined on the big stage.

The throwers, representing Dr. Jack’s Magic City lounge, competed in

The team, called DJ Strokers and which are apart of the local Grandmasters Darts Club, consisted of St. Louisans Micah Brown and Anthony Graham and East St. Louisans W.J. Cade, Willis Jackson II and David Misiaszek.

The rest of the metro area also had a good showing as nearly 20 area teams to Las Vegas and nearly all placed in the top 15 in their said events.

Graham said the team, which has members that have been playing for over 10 years, thought they had a shot.

“We knew we had a chance at the money,” Graham said. He said the team also had a motto that helped them along the way: “There’s no such thing as a loser’s bracket.”

DJ Strokers, which compete locally at Dr. Jack’s Magic City, received $2,100 for their victory and their expenses are paid for their trip back to the championships next year.
