Former Cardinal Ritter College Prep basketball standout Alex Barnett was recently selected as the Ivy League Player of the Year.
The 6’6” Barnett just completed a stellar four-year career at Dartmouth College. He became only the second player from Dartmouth to earn the Player of the Year award in 35 years. Barnett was named the Ivy League Player of the Week four times during the 2008-09 season.
As a senior, Barnett led the Ivy League in scoring at 20.3 points in conference games. He averaged 19.4 points a game overall. Barnett proved to be the league’s best all-around player as he ranked in the top 10 in several categories.
In addition to being the league’s scoring champion, Barnett was eighth in rebounding (5.6), second in free throw percentage (82 percent), eighth in steals (1.9), third in blocked shots (1.2) and sixth in 3-point shooting percentage (40 percent).
A four-year starter, Barnett finished his career with 1,374 points, which ranks eighth on the school’s career list. He also had 551 rebounds, 110 blocks and 111 steals, making him the only player in the school’s history to surpass 100 in each of those categories.
A 2005 graduate of Cardinal Ritter, Barnett was a member of the St. Louis American “Fab Five” All-Star First Team. A top student in the classroom, Barnett also earned the Male Scholar-Athlete Award at the 2004 St. Louis Gateway Classic High School Awards Banquet.
