The St. Louis Cardinals, fresh off an embarrassing sweep at the hands of the rival Chicago Cubs, obtained Ronnie Belliard from the Cleveland Indians on Sunday. The Cardinals sent Hector Luna, who had been part of that time-sharing setup at the keystone corner, to Cleveland.

Belliard is a seven-year Major League veteran with a .289 batting average this season. He has eight home runs, 21 doubles, 44 RBIs and 43 runs scored.

“He’s a good offensive player and he’s a good defensive player,” general manager Walt Jocketty told mlb.com. “Right now he was the best offensive player we felt we could acquire.”
