Off-season with Venus and Serena envy
I guess we are at that time of the year. That time of the year where, aside from hoping that the Cardinals stay healthy and compete, and anticipating the post-season, sports on the St. Louis scene can be a little slow.
Now I have to look at the other sports. The NBA. Kobe and the Lakers versus the Boston Celtics.
Come to think of it, as a lifelong Laker fan, I kind of dig the Celtics anytime they don’t play the Lakers. It’s not like I hate them or compare them to the Taliban, but I’m happy when they have one less point than the Lakers.
Then there is hockey. I know, I know. Maybe not your cup of tea only because no one has ever explained it to you, but I get it. I still say it is the hardest team trophy to compete for, and I never get an answer that has ever been better.
So what else is there to follow?
How about tennis or golf? Simple answer here. Venus, Serena or Tiger. If those individuals are not playing, then out comes the box set of something that has been canceled by the networks.
Now before you go off on “it’s a black thing,” think about it. Where would these sports be if not for these individuals?
Let’s face it, few care about the men’s side of tennis. It has become quite boring after Roger Federer and he is no Haley’s Comet himself. When else is there even a discussion taking place anywhere – other than a Grand Slam event – about anyone else but the Williams sisters?
Let’s hope they stay around longer than some of the other proclaimed phenoms they send out to beat them, only to retire from the sport before they reach their mid 20s.
So what does tennis have to sell? The age-old most popular items on the planet … SEX APPEAL.
Venus stirred up some things when she broke out with some skin-toned shorts under her tennis skirt. Hmmmm. Not many photos of what sort of racket she was swinging that day.
You get the picture. As I did again and again and again, if you know what I mean. It almost made you look at the TV schedule to see if Serena was going to try the same getup. Much to my disappointment she didn’t, but I watched anyway.
The problem here is that some would find this disturbing. Really? I might want to remind those tennis purists that you would have no real interest in your game nor TV ratings if not for these women and their style and fashion. Like them or not, Venus and Serena have saved tennis as we know it, so be thankful instead of being a hater.
No Tiger
As for golf, can you name these guys who win these tournaments that Tiger does not participate in? I understand that there are some young talented players out there, but other than the purist and family members, who really knows these guys, let alone sticks around to watch on the weekends to see if they win?
Yet the mere hint drops that Tiger is on a driving range hitting balls and ESPN drops what they are doing and breaks in to programming with a guy in a shirt and tie telling you all about it. I can not even get a guy in shorts to talk to me at the driving range. Then again I am no Tiger, and I and the rest of you should know neither are you.
The TV ratings show that the PGA would be in big trouble if there were no Tiger. Let him start winning again and, brother, look out.
The problem I have is that the haters seem to still be involved in his personal life, which as we see in virtually any field has become a broken record. Woods is the game, unfortunately, and some need to accept it. The PGA Tour, too, gets no real love with respect to the rest of the field when it comes to buzz. Only Phil Mickelson gets a rise because he is good and some think he may be the fair-haired man of the exclusive sport.
Guess some forgot about some of the rumors that were following him not long ago. Again, it’s none of our business, as the same could be said about Mr. Woods.
