Last summer was different for Maurice Drummond. His long tenure at Fox 2 came to an end. He had an amazing ten year run that saw him go from shagging quotes dressed in sneakers and a polo shirt, to anchoring the news in finely tailored suits (with the pocket square to match). Now Drummond has made another leap as the new sports director at Channel 4.

It’s something many of us didn’t see happening. How often do we see this take place in this market? The last time I remember a sports anchor switching channels in St. Louis was Zip Rzeppa. Zip was much loved back in the early 1980’s on Channel 2. Friday night was must see because off the Zippo Awards. Rzeppa moved on to Channel 4 and he brought his loyal audience with him. Now lightning has struck twice for KMOV.

Drummond couldn’t be on the air for several months due to a ‘no-compete’ clause. He spent six months off television but did do some radio for KMOX.

“I needed a little break. I was getting a little bit worn down by everything that’s going on around me. But, I look at it this way I get a chance to get reintroduce myself with my family again,” Drummond said.

Not only did he get a chance to recharge his batteries, he got to know his new co-workers as well.

“You have two families in a way; the one you go home to and the one you work with. I had to be there. I wanted to let them know we are a team,” said Drummond.

The results so far are good. The station is doing a great job with live shots from any sports breaking story. All of the exclusive interviews are unique with a different style of questioning. Meanwhile, Drummond is reconnecting with his St. Louis fan base and forging new ground for KMOV amongst all area sports fans.

“I took this job because it was the best thing for me and my family. No ifs, ands or butts about it,” Drummond stated. And now that I’m here I need to deliver the goods…We’re going to roll our sleeves up and get dirty.”
