In last week’s American, we covered the third team of African-American stars of Major League Baseball. This week, the series of Black All-Stars continues with the Negro League All-Stars. Next week, we will feature the stars of the National Football League.
First Base: Buck Leonard (Homestead Grays) – The clean-up hitter of the nine-time Negro League champion Homestead Grays.
Second Base: Frank Grant – The earliest of the Negro League stars to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Shortstop: Pop Lloyd (New York Lincoln Giants) – Considered to be the greatest shortstop in the history of the Negro Leagues.
Third Base: Judy Johnson (Hilldale Daisies) – The top defensive third baseman of his time. Also hit .429 in one season.
Left Field: Oscar Charleston (Pittsburgh Crawfords) – Hall of Fame outfielder known for his power and speed.
Center Field: Cool Papa Bell (St. Louis Stars) – Outstanding outfielder known best for his blinding speed.
Right Field: Turkey Stearnes (Detroit Stars) – One of the great power hitters of the Negro Leagues.
Catcher: Josh Gibson (Homestead Grays) – One of the greatest power hitters of all time.
Pitcher: Satchel Page (Kansas City Monarchs) – Superstar pitcher who was the face of the Negro Leagues for many years.
