The East St. Louis Flyers continued their late-season surge with a 66-47 victory over Alton in the semifinals of the IHSA Class 4A Moline
Sectional playoffs. The game was played at Granite City.
East Side (23-8) advances to Friday night’s sectional championship game against the winner of tonight’s Moline-Normal Community game.
Playing without injured leading scorer Keante Minor, the Flyers used a balanced scoring attack to dismantle the Redbirds. Senior point guard Brandon Weston and sophomore guard Deshawn Munson led the way with 18 points each. Junior center Montez Williams and sophomore Johnny McCray scored 12 points each.

*Cahokia will face Salem in the semifinals of the Illinois Class 3A
Sectional playoffs at Salem. The winner will face Centralia on Friday
night for the sectional title. Cahokia won the sectional title last
season and advanced to the Supersectionals.
*On the Missouri side, the Class 3 sectional playoffs will be held
tonight. Cardinal Ritter will take on Orchard Farm in one sectional boys game at Florissant Valley Community College at 6 p.m. Bayless will take on Saxony Lutheran in another boys game at Jefferson College in Hillsboro at 6 p.m. Christian O’Fallon will take on Elsberry at Moberly Area Community College at 6 p.m. In girls sectional action, Cardinal Ritter will face Principia at Flo Valley, beginning at 7:45 p.m. The winners will advance to Saturday’s state quarterfinals.
Billikens Season comes to an end
Saint Louis University’s season came to a end on Tuesday night with a 70-61 loss to Rhode Island in the first round of the Atlantic 10
Conference Tournament. The game was played in Kingston, R.I. The
Billikens were led in scoring by three freshmen. Guard Mike McCall
scored 14 points, center Rob Loe scored 13 points while freshman Dwayne Evans scored 12. The Billikens finished the season with a 12-19 record.
Cuonzo Martin voted MVC Coach of the Year
Congratulations to East St. Louis native Cuonzo Martin, who was recently voted the Coach of the Year in the Missouri Valley Conference. Martin guided the Missouri State Bears to the regular season championship of the MVC and a berth in the championship game of last weekend’s State Farm MVC Tournament. The Bears will enter the postseason with a 25-8 record.
