Former McCluer South-Berkeley High track and field star Michael Rodgers is a national champion once again.
Rodgers won the 60-meter dash as last weekend’s USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Rodgers turned in a winning time of 6.48, which is currently the world leader. The meet was televised on ESPN.
In the process, Rodgers also picked up a check for $25,000 as the men’s winner of the VISA Championship Series, which consisted of three major indoor events. The Melrose Games in New York (where Rodgers finished second in the 60) and the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston.
It was the third national championship performance for Rodgers, who was also an NAIA collegiate star at Lindenwood University in St. Charles and Oklahoma City University.
He was the 2008 USA Indoor Champion in the 60-meter dash as well as the 2009 USA Outdoor national champion in the 100-meter dash.
Rodgers was the silver medalist at the USA Indoors last year as well as the silver medalist as the World Indoor Championships.
