Special to the American
Okay people, it’s time to join Olympic champion and our own Jackie Joyner-Kersee for a little Saturday morning run across the Martin Luther King Bridge.
Joyner-Kersee will be hosting the JJK Bridge Run, A Scenic Run Across the Mississippi River this weeekend. The special 5K run and one mile walk/run will be held on Saturday, beginning and ending at Laclede’s Landing near Martin Luther King. The 5K race will begin at 9 a.m. with the one mile walk-run beginning at 9:45 a.m. The race is open to people of all ages ranging from 11 years to over 70 years old.
The major sponsors of the event are Schnuck’s, which will provide complimentary food and beverage products, and Genuine Nike, which will provide long-sleeve running shirts to the participants.
Medallions will be presented to all of the youth one-mile and 5K finishers with trophies being presented to the top three male and female 5K finishers in eight different age groups from under 11-14 years all the way up to 70 years and older.
*The East St. Louis Flyers football team made their way through the Southwestern Conference three-week gauntlet unscathed and still undefeated. The Flyers defeated fellow conference contenders Alton, O’Fallon and Edwardsville in succession to remain undefeated at 7-0 on the season. East Side defeated visiting Edwardsville 21-17 last Friday in a big SWC showdown. A couple of big stops by the Flyers’ defense in the closing minutes were the difference in the game.
*The Cahokia Comanches have a huge two-game stretch of their own to close the regular season. The Comanches will venture to Belleville to face the Althoff Crusaders on Friday night in a South Seven Conference showdown. The game will be televised on Charter Cable, so Randy Karraker, Demetrious Johnson will be in the house to call this big game. Cahokia will close the regular season next week with a homecoming game against Class 5A power Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin. After a slow start, the Comanches are on a roll with a 5-2 record with a chance to still win the South Seven and make an impact in the postseason.
