As the 2012 NFL draft creeps closer, the mock drafts that are floating around have fans of the St. Louis Rams bubbling with excitement.
Now, these are mock drafts. Anything is capable of happening on draft day. And since the Rams made the big blockbuster trade with the Washington Redskins to move down from number two to number six in the draft, some new variables have arisen.
Who wouldn’t want to be a fly on the wall inside General Manager Les Snead’s office at Rams Park in Earth City? What do Snead and Head Coach Jeff Fisher have in mind for the Rams?
Conventional wisdom says that if the Rams stay at the No. 6 spot they will draft wide out Justin Blackmon. And that sits well with Rams fans abroad no doubt. Now what also tantalizes Rams fans during this draft is the possibility of landing either running back Trent Richardson (Alabama) or cornerback Morris Claiborne (LSU) if Justin Blackmon is not selected.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say that there’s no way in the world Trent Richardson will still be on the board when the Rams pick six. Mike Lombardi from NFL Network has the Rams selecting defensive end Melvin Ingram (South Carolina) with their first pick.
Brian Baldinger, also from NFL Network, has the Rams selecting offensive tackle Matt Kalil (USC). A lot has been made for getting a top-flight weapon for franchise quarterback Sam Bradford to throw the ball to. And of course Justin Blackmon fits the bill.
But, Blackmon isn’t the only receiver who will be around in the first round of the draft that can come in and help out Bradford and the Rams offense. There is Michael Floyd (Norte Dame); some mock drafts have him going as high as either seven to the Jacksonville Jaguars or 10 to the Buffalo Bills. He’s a weapon that can make life easy for a quarterback in the red zone.
Kendall Wright (Baylor) also has some sizzle in his game. He’s slated to fall anywhere between picks 21-26 in the first round. So, if the Rams for whatever reason don’t land Justin Blackmon, the Rams do hold the first pick in the second round. Maybe that could be a bargaining chip to allow them to get back up in the back end of the draft in the first round and grab them a playmaker.
