Floyd Mayweather Jr. announced his return to boxing after a lengthy layoff.  Mayweather has agreed to fight newly crowned welterweight titlist Victor Ortiz on Sept. 17.

The multi-division champion made the announcement on Twitter, stating, “My fans have been waiting long enough. Floyd Mayweather vs Victor Ortiz. Sept-17 2011 for the WBC World Championship.”

Mayweather’s last bout was a lopsided decision victory vs Shane Mosley May 1, 2010.  Boxing fans have been clamoring for the boxing star to face Manny Pacquiao to determine the best ‘pound-for-pound’ fighter in the world.  However Mayweather’s various legal troubles and various demands for the bout have derailed the latest “Fight of the Century” from happening thus far.

Ortiz recently moved up from the junior welterweight weight class to welterweight and upset Andre Berto to claim the WBC championship, which he will defend versus Mayweather.
