While St. Louis has been dubbed the “Murder Capital” along with “most Dangerous City in America,” a new title should be bestowed on our professional athletes who allegedly “represent” St. Louis. EFFORTLESS should be the new title. No, that is not a compliment.
Aside from the Cardinals run to the World Series, the Rams and the Blues have not been just bad, they are an embarrassment to everyone who buys a ticket, jersey or anything else that supports the team.
Lets start with the Rams. The effort on Monday night was awful, and I had a couple of days to sleep on it. It seemed worse than that on Monday night.
This team has shown very little pride in what playing in the NFL is all about. Penalties, lack of execution when running the offense, and no desire to attempt to tackle someone are just starters. With the exception of Will Witherspoon and Leonard Little, the Rams defense would be hard-pressed to stop the Mathews-Dickey Bulldogs. As for the offense, the best defense for Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce would be the play-calling by the offensive coordinator and counting on the offensive line to block long enough for Mark Bulger to complete a pass. Steven Jackson is playing hard; hopefully he understands now how important it is to be a team player.
Special teams play has been taken to another level … subterranean. The coaching has been abysmal, not to mention the acquisitions via free agency and the draft.
It’s not always about the numbers. What really irks me is the lack of effort that has been displayed here recently.
Money is too hard to come by to get the results the fans have been getting recently. For some households, the question will come up soon: “Why do you have tickets to this mess when we could be doing something we could enjoy?” Good luck on an answer for that one, fellas.
Blues snooze
While on the surface, it was not a good day for former Blues head coach Mike Kitchen when he was fired this week, it was really a blessing in disguise. He no longer has to coach the biggest collection of underachievers in the history of St. Louis sports. These guys stole more bases than Lou Brock when it came to lack of effort. No leadership, no skill and no interest is a bad combination to have in pro sports, but the Blues have cornered the market.
These are not the St. Louis Blues that I am familiar with. Yeah, I know they have never won the Stanley Cup, but there was a time when you would watch them and know they were at least trying. Now it’s a session of going through the motions. There are too many fat cats on this team who enjoy living here and raising their families here and not worrying about a thing. It has to stop.
The fans have already stopped going to the games. The few who do go don’t even bother to boo anymore. They have sadly become accustomed to bad play and poor effort.
Give me a few guys who want to play, you ask? The Blues have about four or five who either want to or have the skill to play. The problem is they are overshadowed by the overpaid and at times overweight veterans on this team, who are playing for themselves and not the team or fans. That’s a problem, folks, that no fan should stand for. Congratulations, Rams and Blues. You are well on you way to being the Grinch that stole Christmas for sports fans in St. Louis. How about a little effort during the holiday season?
