The St.

Louis Rams’ off-season has been just as interesting as the regular

season.

“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>New head coach Jeff

Fisher made a decision on who will be his offensive coordinator for

the upcoming season. Brian Schottenheimer was chosen for the

position over Hue Jackson. Fisher said that it was a close call

between the two, but chose Schottenheimer over Jackson.

“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>The hiring of

Schottenheimer has drawn some mixed reviews from the fans and media

alike. Most believe that Schottenheimer was a scapegoat for the New

York Jets because of the lack of progress made by Mark Sanchez at

quarterback. And then fresh in a lot of people’s minds are the

images of Jets wideout Santonio Moss’ meltdown in the Jets

offensive huddle, which led to his being pulled from the

game.

“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”> And like I’ve stated

before, most feel like Schottenheimer has always been given the

proverbial pass because he is the son of a future Hall of Fame

coach. I don’t feel like Schottenheimer was the reason the Jets

offense wasn’t as explosive as some would have liked. However, the

results he’s gotten as coordinator for the Jets, especially from

the quarterback position, has most of us splitting

hairs.

“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>Now, during his six years

as coordinator with the Jets, Schottenheimer’s quarterbacks Chad

Pennington, Brett Favre and Sanchez had a quarterback rating of

77.7 with 104 touchdowns and 98 interceptions. Those numbers aren’t

worthy of an Ozzie Smith back-flip. But, then you have to look a

little deeper into personnel.

“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>As an offensive

coordinator, you need players that can execute your game plan or

you get terminated at the end of the season. Schottenheimer’s

offense is considered part of the famous Don Coryell philosophy

that many coaches still apply today. San Diego Chargers coach Norv

Turner uses it. Former Rams’ head coach Mike Martz had his version

of it. The offense can either be run-heavy or pass-heavy. I don’t

care as long as its win-heavy.

filling out the roster and providing Schottenheimer the weapons he

needs to make Sam Bradford the elite quarterback that we all have

envisioned, let’s give him a chance. Maybe being in a different

environment might be just what the new Rams offensive coordinator

needs to finally silence his critics. And establish that he earns a

NFL check because he’s good at what he does, instead of what his

father has done.
