The St. Louis Rams’ rookie mini-camp/orientation looked and went well over this past Mother’s Day weekend.
All of the new draftees participated, along with several street free agents in the two-day camp. Of course, many fans are clamoring for an update about who looked good. Who performed the best? But, I have to remind you and myself this is just the rookie camp.
Coach Jeff Fisher feels good with the way the orientation has gone so far. The players on both sides of the ball seem to have an idea what to do out there on the field. And whenever you have a new coach, coordinators and rookies, you expect a bumpy ride. Sure, there will be bumps, but Jeff Fisher is very confident that when training camp opens in late July, these football players should already know what to do.
Now, let’s get back to the players and who stuck out and made an impression. Brian Quick, for starters, with his 6’4” frame was catching everything thrown in his direction. He shows a knack for creating yards after the catch and could quickly (no pun) become a Sam Bradford favorite target in the red zone.
Could you imagine 6’4” Danario Alexander lined up on one side and Brian Quick on the other side in the red zone?
Chris Givens is another piece to a now crowded wide out position. His speed is so much needed and now there will be a hotly contested battle amongst the receivers.
Running backs Isaiah Pead and Darryl Richardson bring youth and speed to a backfield that hasn’t had a back with pure speed since Trung Canidate. However! Before you spit your beverage out, hopefully not on our sports section or your keyboard, both of these young men could finally give the Rams that combination of a backfield with a powerhouse, alias Steven Jackson.
Now, between Pead and Richardson, Pead seems like the guy at the number two spot. He runs better routes out the backfield, he drew ooohs and ahhhhs when he darted between the center and guard during 11 on 11 drills last Saturday. Richardson is just as fast, and he’s working very hard at learning the playbook. His straight-line speed makes him a candidate for kickoff returns.
What can I say about rookie cornerbacks Trumaine Johnson and Janoris Jenkins? Both players look like they’ve been here before. And barring an injury to either player, they can push somebody out the door.
There is healthy competition all around this team. And it’s going to only get better.
