Rams secondary second to everyone

Make Joe Jurevicius look like Lynn Swann

For the St. Louis American

After being defeated by their division rivals the Seattle Seahawks, the St. Louis Rams’ locker room was like a morgue.

Nobody had any answers to why the defense played so poorly. The secondary of the Rams got blown up for the second week in a row – this time by the likes of a Joe Jurevicius. It would make the second week in a row the secondary of the Rams got humiliated by a wideout who has yet to become a household name.

Playing against this Rams secondary, former Big Red receiver Clyde Duncan would have had a field day. I know that was a low blow. Let’s be serious for a moment. Is there one person in the Rams secondary that can start anywhere else in the NFL? The answer is a rousing no!

Rams strong safety Adam Archuleta said after the game, “It’s ridiculous. We need to make plays. I don’t care who is out there. They are in the league for a reason.”

The Rams started strong in the game on special teams. They also lost the game on a special teams play. Most of the 66,000 fans wanted to know why wasn’t Terry Fair returning the punt late in the fourth quarter

Fair said after the game that he was a little winded. Okay, Rams fans, know what? Do you question Fair’s toughness because he did not go into the game? Or do you blame the coaching staff for putting in Shaun McDonald to return the punt late in the fourth quarter? It has been obvious that McDonald has not been steady on punt returns since he has come into the league.

And why have him out there risking injury, when you know Torry Holt is going to see a lot of double coverage in the opposing secondary?

Coach Mike Martz took it upon himself to take the blame for the loss. Martz also went on to say on the radio after the game that he was not himself. Martz, who spent most of the week away because of an illness, takes all the bullets for his underachieving team.

You have a patchwork secondary, a punter who is horrific, and problems in the front office. I questioned the Rams signing former Green Bay Packer Mike Hawthorne. He was a role player in the Packers secondary last year. Now all of a sudden the Rams bring him in to shore up the secondary.

It makes no sense to me. He seems to spend a lot of the game out of position.

So, Rams fans, what do you do? It is still too early to talk about next season. The Rams are only 2-3 in one of the weakest divisions in the NFL. They still could qualify to make the playoffs.

However, the Rams have to prepare themselves for the Indianapolis Colts. This could quickly turn into a Monday Night massacre with a NC-17 Rating. Parents, make sure you put the kids to bed early.
