Since the close loss to the New Orleans Saints three weeks ago, the St. Louis Rams keep sliding backwards week after week. The Rams look like a team sliding down a razor board slide into a pool of rubbing alcohol.

In the 17-9 loss to the Chicago Bears last Sunday, the Rams had great field position for most of the game, but that didn’t make much of a difference. Steven Jackson rushed for more than 100 yards for the seventh time this season. But that didn’t make much of a difference.

The Chicago Bears were begging the Rams to beat them last Sunday, but that didn’t make much of a difference. The Bears’ defense dared the Rams to throw the ball deep, but that didn’t make much of a difference. You see where this is going.

It appears to me that week after week, every team that plays the Rams pretty much does the same thing. They crowd the line of scrimmage and make Steven Jackson beat them. Steven is doing one hell of a job against the opposing defenses he sees every week. Did we see the play-action pass? No. We were treated to the Kyle Boller special, when he rolls to the right to throw an underneath pass behind the line of scrimmage to tight end Randy McMichael.

In third down and long-yardage situations, it looked like the Rams were conceding the down. They were satisfied that they didn’t turn the ball over and were playing the field position game. It’s not like the Rams’ defense is the Baltimore Ravens defense from earlier this decade that played the field position game as good as anyone in the NFL.

I appreciate the effort from this undermanned team. We know about the low talent level already. But, every now and then, the coaches should be able to win you a game or two. If you are a fan of the Rams or football in general, you see other so-called bad teams actually showing some creativity on offense and pulling out an occasional win or even an upset.

For the second year in a row, the Oakland Raiders have a chance at winning more games than the Rams. How does that happen?

I listen to people talk about how bad they are, but somehow, someway they pulled off three huge upsets this season. The Raiders have beaten the Philadelphia Eagles and the Cincinnati Bengals, who are both headed to the playoffs. Last Sunday, Oakland won on the road against the Pittsburg Steelers.

Why not the Rams? Okay. Okay. It wouldn’t make much of a difference.
