No excuse not to sell out the title fights
Former St. Louis police officer Kevin Cunningham is one of the best trainers in professional boxing and he is so proud of his 140-pound world champion Devon Alexander.
Alexander, the WBC and IBF champion, will put his crowns on the line against Andriy Kotelnik of the Ukriane on Saturday August 7 at the Scottrade Center.
Team Cunningham will bring his championship fighter to the “314” for a homecoming for Alexander, who last fought in St. Louis on the same night Cunningham and Cory Spinks defeated Deandre “The Bull” Latimore and his promoter Steve Smith and Rumbletime Productions for the IBF junior middleweight title on April 24, 2009.
Alexander “The Great” will be the headliner of the card that also will include another championship bout between IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris “Thunder” Cloud (20-0, 18KOs) against former IBF world champion Glenn Johnson. And Team Cunningham and Don King Productions are bringing to the “314” for the first time HBO’s Boxing After Dark, which will televise both championship fights.
“Devon is the perfect example of what you can do with hard work and dedication,” Cunningham said. “He was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He wasn’t even the best fighter in my gym. But look at him now. Look at what hard work and remembering to rise above your circumstances can do.”
The champ had some kind words for his opponent Andriy Kotelnik.
“Kotelnik is a good solid fighter. But I’m a better fighter,” Alexander said. “His time has come and gone. He was a champion but he’s not anymore, and he’s certainly not going to be champion after this fight.”
Cunningham predicted an AS………WHIPPING on Saturday, Aug. 7.
“I never make predictions, and I wasn’t going to tell the public this, but I told my team last week that Devon’s going to knock out Kotelnik in two rounds. Were kicking his as……………..”
That’s what I’m talking about , and the greatest promoter of all time, Don King was even more eloquent.
“So you know, what we have here is like when Dorothy clicked her heels in the Wizard of Oz, like Marvin Gaye said, ‘Something Going On.’ We’ve got something big going on in St. Louis on August 7th, King said. ‘Two world championships already, and I’m not done building the card yet.”
Cloud and Johnson will be a great fight also, with a possible title fight for Spinks still a possibility. Cotto, Shane Mosley – you just don’t know with King promoting the fight. One thing about Don King, he gives the public its money worth with his fight cards.
Ticket prices start at a reasonable price of $17.50, $35, $70, $150, and $300 for ringside seats. We asked that the folks in the “314” and the “618” support Devon in his homecoming championship bout when these two worlds titles are put on the line in St. Louis, with a first-time appearance for HBO’s Boxing After Dark program.
Scott Notes
No excuses for the Scottrade Center not to be sold out for Devon Alexander’s homecoming for the IBF and WBC 140-pound championship fight. Alexander’s reputation as not only a good fighter, but a great person is just one of many reasons the community should support Team Cunningham and the champ.
Hats off to St. Louis City Police Chief Dan Isom for attending the Little League Super Series a couple of weeks ago in Affton. Chief Isom spent the afternoon watching kids play 10U select baseball in a game where I was behind the plate.
He said I was very consistent, one of the best he’s seen … I told him thank you. Take that, TD.
