President Barack Obama welcomed the University of Connecticut’s national champion women’s basketball team to the White House today (Mon., May 17) calling them the best team in all of sports last year, “by far.” “I want to point out this team has not lost a game since I was elected president,” the president said.
The UConn women won their second straight NCAA championship earlier this year and are on a 78-game winning streak. It was the seventh title for the program.
During their trip to the White House last year, Obama invited the team for an impromptu basketball shooting contest on the White House basketball court, which the president won. No word if a rematch was planned for this year.
“I was telling them Michelle and I work out in the morning — see, we got a little gym here in the White House — and we just watch ‘SportsCenter,’ ” Obama said. “I know you’ll be surprised that we don’t watch the news shows. But — this is really true. You know, during the entire season, I just kept on repeating — and I truly believe — this was the best team in all of sports, any sport, any gender, by far.”
