The SportsEye differs with Demetrious Johnson’s column on his website that blames Spinks’ loss on trainer Kevin Cunningham and the Spinks’ team.
Spinks had a traffic ticket situation that had to be handled at the last moment, but to say that Cunningham or anyone else other than Cory Spinks should be responsible is absurd. Even if Spinks had been arrested the day before the fight, he would have simply paid his bond and been back at work a few hours later. Johnson made it sound like he was rescued from death row moments before the opening bell.
Cunningham and Team Spinks made Cory a champion, and he should continue to trust them. Spinks’ fans by the number have challenged Johnson’s assertion, and some have said that Johnson is interested in putting Spinks’ career in white hands rather than black. This certainly is not true. But to blame Cunningham and others for Spinks’ loss is a disservice to Cory Spinks, and more importantly, Zab Judah.
Judah won the fight by hitting Spinks harder and more often than Spinks hit him. That’s not a corner man’s fault, not the legal system’s fault and not the media’s fault. Fault falls squarely on the shoulders of Cory Spinks, who is man enough to handle what happened and not blame Cunningham or his team.
