This weekend’s battle of the Spartans will feature two teams that are coming off impressive opening week shutouts in Week 1.
The DeSmet Spartans defeated Hazelwood Central 28-0 while the Hazelwood East Spartans are coming off a 55-0 conquest of Suburban North Conference foe Pattonville.
DeSmet is led by do-it-all senior performer Durron Neal, who scored three touchdowns against Hazelwood Central last weekend. Quarterback Conner Harrison tossed three touchdown passes while the Spartans’ defense limited Hazelwood Central to just 63 yards of total offense.
Hazelwood East is led by senior quarterback Trey Hill, who threw for 177 yards and four touchdowns against Pattonville. The Spartans also rushed for 233 yards on the ground while sophomore Diondre Worthy scored on a 65-yard punt return and a 62-yard interception return.
Both teams qualified for the state playoffs last season. DeSmet advanced to the Class 6 state semifinals while Hazelwood East advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class 5 state playoffs.
