Rams player Steven Jackson and head coach Jeff Fisher say that the running back being benched during Sunday’s victory over the Washington Redskins was due to injury and not penalty.
“It had nothing to do with the spike,” Fisher said. “That is what the rumor was around. His groin was real tight and it just didn’t make sense. We just didn’t want to subject him to it.”
Jackson was flagged for spiking the ball in frustration after he was stopped twice at the one-yard line in what appeared to be a touchdown. The Rams would have to settle for a field goal following the penalty.
“I thought I was in, but I spiked the ball thinking it was a touchdown,” Jackson said.
According to Jackson, the groin strain occurred during the last drive and continued to bother him on the sideline. He also called the injury ‘not that serious’ and thinks he can bounce back ‘fairly fast.’
