The annual debate has arisen
again in college football. Yes, there are schools who are not happy
with the BCS (Bowl Championship Series). Well what do you
know.

You can pick a
season and someone is upset, and like clockwork the call for a
playoff will be made and, like the annual tradition it has become,
it will fall on deaf ears.

Ever notice
that the teams that win never complain when they are in the
driver’s seat? You have not heard a word from the most powerful
conference, the SEC, mainly because they have the No. 1 and 2
ranked teams in the country facing each other for the
championship.

If the
presidents of these universities really want change, it would have
happened by now. Instead you have some geniuses thinking this
annual debate is good for college sports. Yeah, just like the
cheating and now other shenanigans that we are learning about daily
that happens on college campuses are good discussion
items.

I am not sure
if there is an element of sports that has become more frustrating
and eventually disgusting as what we have with college sports. As
the pundits in Washington say, now that our political system is
broken, I only wish they had to time to look at the mess we call
college athletics. It makes Washington look like a disagreement at
a Cub Scout meeting, and yet with money that is at stake you would
have thought someone would have called time out by now to fix the
problem. Guess they are too busy counting the money they have
already made.

As for the BCS,
it is so flawed, the leaders of this debacle find themselves either
defending it, tweaking the system of voting, or trying to redefine
what their role is as the ink has yet to dry on the adjustments
they attempt to make. It is a mess and there are no plans to fix
it, which means coaches whose teams are not where they think they
should be will continue to gripe. Only the names of the teams will
change but the situation will remain the same, at least for the
foreseeable future.

While I knew
this would be a tough season for the Rams, I never thought the
snowball that was going down hill has now turned into a
full-fledged avalanche. The only thing to do here is what happens
when that dominos game has gone south or that hand of bid whist has
no hope – you can only say one thing …UNCLE! I
surrender.

Everything that
could go wrong has gone wrong for the team. Starting at the top,
with an owner who has been of the absentee ilk, to a general
manager who has failed in the draft and free agent signings that
have been borderline embarrassing to a coach who has few real
weapons and has decided to be as conservative as Newt
Gingrich. Throw in a collection of aging, under-skilled players and
you have the St. Louis Rams.

Sad but
true.

Before you
start to feel sorry for Stephen Jackson and how it has been
somewhat of a wasted career with respect to him being on a winning
team, I will remind you that he is being paid handsomely to endure.
To be honest, seldom do we see a guy be a pro on and off the field
as he has displayed. Now you can feel sorry for him.

While you may
think as a writer I would enjoy pointing this out, you are
mistaken. We have all run out of things to say about this
situation.

I do have one
suggestion though. As you know, the Rams cannot score and they have
the most unimaginative offense in the last 50 years at least. They
are seldom in games late and, as I look at the schedule, I noticed
that they play this Monday night.

Again, I say,
“Uncle!” as I plead with the NFL and ESPN to go to alternate
programming and spare us. Tongue in cheek, of course, but this has
gotten worse by the week and it cannot be over soon enough. This
will be a season we will not soon forget, although we need to
remember it so it will not happen again.

Welcome back,
Tiger

Yes, that was Tiger Woods who won a golf tournament Sunday and
wasn’t it a sight that has been missing from the tour?
“margin-bottom: 4.05pt; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;”>
Woods played
well through out the weekend and went birdie, birdie to win the
Chevron over Zach Johnson, who claimed he did not have his “A”
game. That’s funny how quickly these guys forget, as there was a
time when they would be in the final pairing with Tiger on Sunday
and they could have brought the whole alphabet with them to try and
beat him and they had no shot.

Perhaps this
will be the start of something as the ratings show that Tiger still
has that “it” factor working for him. Throw in the fact that the
Rams were on at the same time and you can only see so many car
wrecks before you say, “UNCLE!”
