Kevin Cunningham is making moves from the corner to the camera. The acclaimed boxing trainer, manager and sports bar owner has joined the Premier Boxing Champions commentating crew on BounceTV.
Cunningham is joined by veteran sports commentator Fran Charles and former WBA Light Middleweight Champion Austin Trout. The three-man crew will be live in action Sunday night when super welterweight prospect Erickson “The Hammer” Lubin (13-0-0, 10 KO) faces Jose De Jesus Macias (18-4-2, 9 KO) on Bounce TV. The undercard bout will feature Alex DeJesus (21-1-0, 13 KO) vs Joseph Elegele (14-2-0, 10 KOs).
For Cunningham, the transition to television was a natural one. The man who led Cory Spinks and Devon Alexander to several major world championships has never been afraid to speak his mind. Now he is able to share his decades of knowledge and insight in the sweet science.
“It’s something I thought would be a great opportunity,” Cunningham told The American. “I realized it’s something I really enjoy doing and is basically a whole new career.”
Don’t make the mistake of thinking Cunningham’s new career will take the place of his old ones. He enjoys wearing many hats and doesn’t plan to stop training or managing fighters anytime soon.
“That’s what I do,” said Cunningham. “That’s the only way I can function – to have several irons in the fire.”
Sunday night’s telecast will be Cunningham’s second appearance on Bounce TV. His first telecast was an October heavyweight matchup between former world title contenders Malik Scott and Tony Thompson.
He expects to host 8-10 PBC telecasts on Bounce TV in 2016.
