“font-family: Verdana;”>The St. Louis Rams continued their downward spiral down a razor sliding board into a pool of rubbing alcohol with another disappointing loss 23-20 to the Arizona Cardinals.
“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>I almost said the woeful Cardinals, but they’re not the ones looking dazed and shocked, and defeated. For the second time in less than a month, the Cardinals took another win away from the Rams.
“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>And this loss stings even more than the overtime loss when rookie return man Patrick Peterson singed the Rams for a 99-yard punt return in overtime last month.
“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>So guess what happened this time? Peterson didn’t have to wait until overtime to do it to the Rams. His 80-yard punt return for a touchdown was part of a little scoring outburst where the Cardinals outscored the Rams 17-0 in the third quarter. The Rams apparently didn’t learn their lesson from the prior meeting.
“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>And the people are tired of this. I said it before and I will keep saying it. The Rams owe it to the people of St. Louis to put a better product on the field. I don’t have to wait and see anymore games to determine whether or not head coach Steve Spagnuolo or general manager Billy Devaney keep their jobs after this season.
“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>Spagnuolo just is not head coaching material. This team is not as good as he thinks or as he says. Spagnuolo is a nice guy, but he wasn’t hired to be nice. He was hired to win games. He was hired to bring the franchise back to prominence, not sink the ship below sea level. Spagnuolo is too conservative and in times like this he needs to show some fire and some gumption.
“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>But, fire and gumption isn’t the only thing you want to see from the head coach. You want to see a flair to roll the dice, especially when you have nothing to lose at 2-9. And that’s something that has been missing on the Rams’ sideline since the departure of Mike Martz who by the way is the only St.Louis Rams coach to win 25-plus games. His winning percentage was .624. Steve Spagnuolo winning percentage is .225.
“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>I’m not advocating bringing Martz back, just using that as an example. The Rams used to be drenched in swag. As a fan you felt that every game is winnable. Not anymore. It’s hard to even cheer a good play because in the back of your mind you hope no flag is lying on the field.
“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>And as for Billy Devaney, just look at Spagnuolo numbers. Enough said.
