I hate to be repetitive. However, the St. Louis Rams are repetitive on the football field – and I don’t care if it’s just a preseason game.
Now I’m making reference to the Rams’ loss to the Tennessee Titans this past Sunday. I see red flags already. Normally, you kind of take the “wait and see” approach this time of the year. Well, not when it’s the Rams.
This is Jeff Fisher’s fourth season as head coach. And I think this team and this franchise should be a lot better than this.
The first-string offensive line looks bad. If they keep this up, Nick Foles will be wrapped up in more bandages then Mummra. Foles didn’t have a good game. He threw a pick six and the receivers couldn’t get open.
I can’t for the life of me understand the purpose of signing Foles to a contract extension if you can’t count on the line to protect him. Nick Foles may as well have the number 8 on the back of his jersey. What a grossly negligent decision to overlook having a solid line to protect your most recent investment.
It’s unfair to Foles to wait for this young, inexperienced line to gel as he dodges defensive ends, tackles and even his own offensive linemen getting knocked on their back like a cockroach that just got a cap of rubbing alcohol poured on it.
Sad to say, but so far Fisher hasn’t worked out. The Rams are better. But, the Rams are no closer to being a contender than they were when the previous regime ran the organization into downtown hell.
Let’s just look at one area because I can write all day about their shenanigans. Point Differential: 2012 (49), 2013 (16) and 2014 (30).
In 2013, the Rams had two three-game losing streaks and lost an additional two straight in the month of December. Last season they started off losing three out of the first four games then closed the season out with a three-game losing streak.
This looks like the same thing. As a matter of it is the same thing. But, you know what? Like I used to say, maybe it’s not the players. It’s the officials selecting the players.
The Rams have drafted at least six running backs since 2012 and selected all the offensive line in this past draft, and the end result is not a damn good thing. “Ground and pound” only works when you win at the point of attack. Play action works when you can run the ball effectively.
And those two things tie back into the offensive line, which has been an eyesore since Mike Martz left. Yeah I brought his name up again. He’s only the winningest coach in St. Louis Rams history. And the last coach to bring some excitement on offense.
But, that’s in the past. No need to keep repeating old stuff. Hmm, like a syndicated rerun.
