Last week,
I along with the majority of citizens in the city of St.Louis
wanted some change to happen for the St. Louis Rams. And it
has.
“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>Not even a full 24 hours after the Rams’ 34-27 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the last regular season game, head coach Steve Spagnuolo and general manager Billy Devaney were relieved of their duties. Approximately a week later, the Rams are in hot pursuit of former Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher.
“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>As am I writing this column, Jeff Fisher is in St. Louis visiting Rams Park in Earth City. I talked with an anonymous source and was left with the impression that Fisher will accept the job with the Rams. As of press time, he was said to be deciding between the Rams and the Miami Dolphins.
“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>Now on CBS.com, it was said that the deal is 95 percent done. But, Fisher wanted to be assured that the Rams are not going to be on the move anytime soon. It’s been well documented that the stress he had to deal with when the Houston Oilers moved from Houston to Tennessee 15 years ago.
“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>My gut says that he will take the job with the Rams. However, if Fisher turns down the job it could cause more speculation that the Rams could actually move.
“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>Now, the Rams other interview for the vacant position was with Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton. Horton was an assistant with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2004-2010, and he’s an in-your-face type of coach, very blunt and straightforward.
“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>Either way, whoever the Rams select as head coach will be coming into a great situation. The Rams secured the second pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.
“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>And depending on how Robert Griffin III does at the combine the Rams could catch a nice bounty for any team salivating at the chance to get a game-changing talent like RG3. If RG3 doesn’t wow scouts at the combine, teams like the Cleveland Browns will be more willing to sit and wait for him to fall into their lap at No. 4.
“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>Now, the Browns also have a second firs- round pick in the draft at number 23. So the Rams could actually score two game-changing players in the first round of the draft if that scenario plays out.
“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>There is plenty of money under the cap for the Rams to spend in free agency. Ray Rice (Baltimore), DeSean Jackson (Philadelphia), Mario Williams (Houston), Courtland Finnegan (Tennessee) are some of the top free agents available.
“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>It all depends on the right moves on the coaching and general manager hire and the right moves in free agency and the right moves on draft day. If that happens, the Rams will play again after week 17.
