St. Louis

Rams owner Stan Kroenke had the right bait to catch the hottest

head coaching candidate available in the NFL.

“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>It was this past Friday

when the football world learned that Jeff Fisher has accepted the

head coaching job for the Rams. Fisher took his time in making his

decision to become the eighth head coach of the Rams since they

moved to St. Louis in 1995.

“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>Having a head coach like

Fisher brings an instant kind of credibility to the locker room.

And credibility was something that was much needed for a football

franchise that hasn’t had a winning season since 2003 or been in a

playoff game since the 2004-05 season.

“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>Fisher has already stated

that he will assemble a rock-star type of coaching staff. Greg

Williams will be his defensive coordinator for the upcoming season.

Williams was with the Tennessee Titans from 1994-2000. He spent his

last three seasons as Fisher’s defensive coordinator before

accepting a head coaching job with the Buffalo Bills.

“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>Williams eventually ended

up with the New Orleans Saints and assisted them to their first

ever Super Bowl a couple seasons ago. Now, Williams’ most recent

game was not so memorable. The Saints’ defense just could not stop

San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis. Davis shredded the

Saints secondary with seven catches for 180 yards. Nevertheless,

Williams appears to be the next Rams’ defensive

coordinator.

“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>Over the weekend, Brian

Schottenheimer has interviewed with the Rams for the offensive

coordinator position. Schottenheimer has spent his last six years

with the New York Jets.

“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>I have my own questions

about Schottenheimer. I’m just not big on Brian Schottenheimer, who

is often accused of getting jobs because of nepotism. He father is

legendary coach Marty Schottenheimer, who is rumored to take the

head coaching job in Tampa Bay. I think there are other good

offensive coordinators out there who Fisher should look at such as

former Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress. There is Green

Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Tom Clements or New Orleans Saints

assistant Joe Lombardi.

“font-size: 9.0pt; font-family: Verdana;”>Whoever the offensive

coordinator is,  I hope he not only has the playmakers, but also

some sizzle and imagination. We have been overdue for far too long.

It’s an anxious time for the Rams. At least for now it’s a good

anxious.
