Cards vs. Royals? Hammer vs. nail

Kansas City Royals’ fans you might have the 1985 World Series trophy (which you stole with the help of umpire Don Denkinger), but you now have one of the most pathetic franchises in recent sports history.

Anyone at Kaufmann Stadium in Kansas City for the I-70 Series between the Cardinals and Royals last weekend might have been wondering if they were really in K.C. A sea of Cardinal red covered the seats all weekend and it was almost as if the Cardinals had three extra home games added to their schedule.

About 80 percent of the stadium at each game was red – maybe a good portion of the crowd was comprised of Cardinal fans, or maybe some Royal fans have come to their senses and decided to cheer for a winner.

Though some might see this as a “rivalry,” it’s becoming far from that. A true rivalry (see Cubs-Cards) would have a mixture of fans at the game, and more than a handful of the “hometown” fans would show up. A rivalry would also include competition from both teams, and the Royals aren’t holding up their end of the bargain. Cardinals vs. Royals is like hammer vs. nail. It isn’t a rivalry.

After the Cardinals finished a painless (painful if you were wearing blue) three-game series sweep on Sunday, the players and fans had enough.

Pitcher Scott Elarton told Royal Nation what they had known all along. He said his team is “terrible” and “bad in every facet of the game.”

On radio talk shows afterwards, fans called in to tell the hosts they were sorry they had to cover such a bad team.

Yeah, Kansas City, you might have ’85 (which, once again, you stole) but we have our dignity.
