Hasan Houston was one of the most talented and graceful high school basketball players the St. Louis area has ever produced. A star athlete at University City High School in the 1970s, Houston played baseball and football and was an All Metro basketball player. He went on to play one season at the University of Kansas before transferring to Bradley University. Now 47, Houston suffered a heart attack last July and after spending nine months in the hospital has been at home since April 2005. His condition has not improved significantly. He is unable to move and is being fed intravenously.
Attorney Tamee Reese, a University of Kansas graduate, is organizing a fundraiser for Houston that will be hosted by St. Louisans who attended KU.
“I’m sure at times Hasan’s wife Felicia feels a bit overwhelmed,” Reese said. “Even with everything that has happened, she is still a wife and there are four kids to parent along with on-going expenses. There still are pressing financial concerns.”
The Hasan Houston Medical Relief Benefit Concert is planned for 8 p.m Friday, August 26, at Lee Auditorium, 5700 Lindell, in Forest Park at the Missouri History Museum. Doors will open at 7:30. The event will feature several notables, including KSDK Channel 5 sports anchor Frank Cusumano as emcee. Tickets can be purchased either at the door or in advance at Vintage Vinyl for $20, and limited preferred seating is available for $40. Sponsors are still being sought.
