As quiet as its being kept, Cory Spinks will put his IBF Jr. Middleweight Championship on the line on January 6 in Hollywood, Fla., at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Spinks is taking on “Smooth” Rodney Jones in a 12-round title fight.
Jones is 37-3-1 with 22 knockouts and is labeled as a crafty southpaw. He’s also 38 years old, which means the youthful Spinks should have no trouble dispatching of him. The bigger question, barring an upset, is who would be next for Spinks.
Floyd Mayweather decided to take on Carlos Baldomir instead of Spinks in November, but Mayweather now has his sight set on a May 5 showdown with Oscar De La Hoya.
The main event on Jan. 6 pits “Nigerian Nightmare” Samuel Peter versus James “Lights Out” Toney in a WBC Heavyweight elimination bout.
In case you’re thinking of taking a mid-winter trip to the sunshine of Florida, tickets for the event are $500, $300, $150, $100 and $50. Go to www.seminolehardrockhollywood.com for details.
