The Sports Eye was surprised to see Post-Dispatch columnist Tom Wheatley at the finals of the Golden Gloves, submitting a report that would be buried the next day on page 11 of that paper’s “Sports” section, two pages behind the “Fishing Report” (which broke the story that the bass were really biting on spinner baits and plastic worms at the Lake of the Ozarks).

It was amusing watching Wheatley survey a bout sheet filled with unfamiliar names (to him), looking like a sheepish father flipping through the instruction manual to his kid’s 20-piece toy requiring “some” assembly. He was overheard asking his neighbor at ringside questions such as “Which bout is this?” and “Now, which kid is this?” and explaining to a boxing official “Unless it’s “Guns ‘N Hoses” or a Cory Spinks fight, we don’t cover boxing.”

He told another official “I’ll see you in November (at the “Guns ‘N Hoses” card).”

The Post’s readers who happen to be boxing fans certainly deserve more than such half-baked coverage, as do the talented athletes and trainers who work so hard.
