American tennis doubles star Taylor Townsend continued her impressive run in the U.S. Open in the singles competition with another impressive victory over one the world’s top players.

Townsend defeated No. 5 seed Mirra Andreeva of Russia in straight sets to advance to Sunday’s round of 16. It took Townsend less than 90 minutes to defeat Andreeva 7-5, 6-2 in the match held at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows, New York. It is only the second time in Townsend’s career that she has advanced to the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament in singles. She entered the tournament ranked 139th in the world.

Townsend had made headlines on Wednesday after she defeated No. 25 Jelena Ostapenko in the second round in straight sets. After the match was over, Townsend was the recipient of some nasty remarks from Ostapenko when they met at the net. Townsend was widely praised for the classy way in which she handled the situation. Meanwhile, Ostapenko has received major backlash throughout the tennis community for her post-match rant.

Meanwhile, Townsend has continued to march through the tournament as she had defeated all three of her opponents in straight sets. And with each match, she has emerged as one of the crowd favorites in New York during the week.

Townsend is currently ranked No. 1 in the world as a doubles player. Townsend and her partner Katerina Siniakova won the Wimbledon doubles championship in 2024 and the Australian Open title this year.

Townsend will try to continue her improbable run on Sunday when she faces Barbora Krejcikova in a fourth-round match. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals.
