St. Louis area seniors are invited to celebrate the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday at the annual “Power to End Stroke Health Fair and Luncheon,” to be held 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Monday January 15 at the St. Louis City Center Sheraton Hotel and Suites.

Hosted by the American Heart Association’s Minority Council and Express Scripts, the event will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his wife, Corretta Scott King by educating and empowering St. Louis-area residents about ways that they can lower their risk of suffering a stroke.

The fair will include educational materials; blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol screenings; and door prizes.

African Americans are twice as likely to suffer strokes and have higher rates of cardiovascular disease and other heart-related chronic conditions. Corretta Scott King, the widow of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. passed away in January 2006 as a result of complications from a serious stroke and heart attack she suffered in August of 2005.
