Kennard Williams, organizer for Decarcerate STL, led a protest at St. Louis City Hall on Thursday, May 11 to demand that Mayor Lyda Krewson close St. Louis City’s Medium Security Institution, known as the Workhouse.

Vinita Park Mayor James W. McGee, along with Chairman Dan Clasby of the Village of Vinita Terrace, thanked the administration of Vinita Terrace for the smooth transition during their May 10 merger ceremony at the new North County Police Cooperative in the 8000 block of Page at Midland. Vinita Terrance has officially merged with Vinita Park.

Hazelwood West honor student Jeremie Osaghae-Nosa, a senior, and junior class president Kyra Pearson wore their cords for graduation while protesting in front of the school on Wednesday, May 17 in support of teachers in the district. About two dozen students protested suspensions of nearly 200 classmates after they walked out of school in support of teachers this week. The ACLU of Missouri said it is “actively preparing legal options if the district continues to jeopardize the students’ futures.”

Cheyenne Hawkins, a junior at University City High School, has been accepted by the AFS language program in Paraguay. She will be spend the summer living with a family in the capitol city of Asuncion and study Spanish. Half her program fees will come from the AFS-USA Faces of America program and half from the Quest Scholarship Fund at the St. Louis Community Foundation.
