The City of St. Louis reported five deaths from COVID-19 and 97 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, May 3. Coming on the day before Gov. Mike Parson lifted his weak public health order for Missouri, this was the largest single-day surge in new cases in the city since the onset of the pandemic.

The city, which remains under the mayor’s stay-at-home order, has now has reported 70 deaths and 1,304 cases.

Of the 1304 COVID-19 cases reported in the city, 803 (or 61.6%) were black. Of the 70 victims of the pandemic, 50 (71.4%) were black. Only 45.9% of the city’s population is black, according to U.S. Census data.

“African Americans continue to be disproportionately impacted by COVID-19,” said Dr. Fredrick Echols, St. Louis health director.

With 70 reported deaths from the pandemic in 1304 reported cases, 5.4% of the people in the city who tested positive have died.
