The fight against breast cancer will continue to receive financial support from the Breast Cancer Research semipostal stamp.
Congress passed and President George W. Bush approved a four-year extension for the stamp to raise money for breast cancer research.
Semipostal stamps are first-class mail postage stamps that are issued and sold by the U.S. Postal Service at a price above the first class single-piece first-ounce rate to raise funds for designated causes.
By law, 70 percent of the net proceeds raised by the stamp are given to the National Institutes of Health and 30 percent is given to the Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense to fund advances in research and treatment.
Since it first went on sale in 1998, the U.S. Postal Service sold more than 802 million stamps, raising $59.5 million for breast cancer research.
