In a recent Sunday Times profile, Miguel claimed to possess more musical talent than Frank Ocean and The Weeknd, both of which the 29-year-old is often compared. “I genuinely believe that I make better music,” Miguel said about Ocean and The Weeknd.
The statement continued:
“I wouldn’t say we were friends. To be completely honest — and no disrespect to anyone — I genuinely believe that I make better music, all the way around. It’s interesting, but we’ll see who’s in it for the long haul. It’s like a marathon, you know?”
Miguel got an earful online after his Sunday Times interview, so he took to Instagram on Monday to clear the air. He posted a message essentially blaming his comment on his competitiveness:
“Yes, I am competitive, we ALL have to have a level of competitiveness to put ourselves on the line day in and day out,” he wrote. “But I also believe there’s room for all artists.”
He ended his note with a nod to Ocean’s 2012 debut “Channel Orange,” saying: “There’s no need to compare apple to oranges, there’s something out there for everyone. That’s why I’m here and I’m able to do what I do. So, thank you to everyone who enjoys my music and all love to anyone who doesn’t, we’re all here to find our own wave and that’s OK!”
